The following are summaries of Bills that have been introduced for consideration by the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories.  Bill summaries are avialable after First Reading.  Use 
this link to view the status of the Bills.

Please note that Bills posted on this website are in two categories: 2nd Reading Bills and Certified Bills. 

2nd Reading Bills do NOT include changes made by motion in Standing Committee or Committee of the Whole.

BILL 3 - An Act to Amend the Education Act  Bill in PDF Format

This Bill replaces the definition "week" in the Employment Standards Act.

BILL 4 - Miscellaneous Statutes Amendment Act, 2008  Bill in PDF Format

This Bill corrects inconsistencies and errors in the Statutes of the Northwest Territories.  The Bill deals with other matters of a minor, non-controversial and uncomplicated nature in the Statutes, and repeals enactments and provisions that have ceased to have effect.

BILL 5 - An Act to Amend the Maintenance Orders Enforcement Act  Bill in PDF Format

This Bill amends the Maintenance Orders Enforcement Act to provide additional enforcement measures that may be taken by the Maintenance Enforcement Administrator for the purpose of enforcing a maintenance order that is filed with the Maintenance Enforcement Office.

BILL 8 - Appropriation Act, 2008-2009 Bill in PDF Format

This Bill authorizes the Government of the Northwest Territories to make operations expenditures and capital investment expenditures for the 2008-2009 fiscal year.

This Bill makes supplementary appropriations for the Government of the Northwest Territories for the 2007-2008 fiscal year.


BILL 10 - An Act to Amend the Pharmacy Act Bill in PDF Format

This Bill amends the Pharmacy Act to allow pharmacists to prescribe a limited quantity of certain drugs for the continued care of a patient.  Pharmacists are required to notify the initial prescribing practitioner of the contined care prescriptions.


BILL 11 - An Act to Amend the Legisaltive Assembly and Executive Council Act Bill in PDF Format

This Bill amends the Legislative Assembly and Executive Council Act to provide a travel allowance to a member who attends a sitting or meetings of a committee of the Legislative Assembly after he or she has attended the sitting or meetings for eight consecutive sitting or meeting days.


BILL 12 - An Act to Amend the Human Rights Act  Bill in PDF Format

This Bill amends provisions of the Human Rights Act pertaining to the appointment of Commission members.  Responsibility for hiring staff members is vested in the Director, and they become employees in the public service. Both the Commission and Director may appoint assistants and engage advisors. The Commission is empowered to make its own rules of procedure, and the annual reporting requirements of the Commission are simplified. The Board of Management is given a role in the making of certain regulations under the Act, and such regulations are to be made in consultation with the Commission and the Director.

This Bill includes a number of amendments to update the discipline process in the Legal Profession Act.


BILL 14 - An Act to Amend the Income Tax Act  Bill in PDF Format

This Bill amends provisions of the Income Tax Act to make them consistent with parallel provisions of the Income Tax Act (Canada) that relate to charitable donation and medical expense tax credits, to returns, assessments, withholding and payment, and to tax avoidance.


BILL 15 - An Act to Amend the Workers' Compensation Act  Bill in PDF Format

This Bill amends the Workers’ Compensation Act to permit the Minister to appoint the chairperson of the Governance Council to a term not exceeding three years, and to reappoint that person so long as the reappointment does not result in a period of consecutive service exceeding six years. The length of service that the appointee previously had as a director of the Governance Council does not limit the term of his or her appointment as chairperson.

This Bill makes supplementary appropriations for the Government of the Northwest Territories for the 2008-2009 fiscal year.


Bill 19 - Donation of Food Act

This Bill provides that a person who donates food or distributes donated food is not liable for disease, injury, death, or other harm resulting from the consumption of that food unless the person intended to harm the recipient or acted recklessly in donating or distributing the food.  Similar provisions apply to the directors, agents, employees and volunteers of corporations involved in the donation or distribution of food.
