This Bill amends the Partnership Act to allow for, and to establish rules and procedures governing, the registration in the Northwest Territories of limited liability partnerships formed in the Northwest Territories, or formed in another jurisdiction but carrying on business in the Northwest Territories. In addition, the Bill includes amendments to update or clarify the language of various provisions of the Act.

This Bill amends the Legal Services Act to provide that a lawyer employed by the Legal Services Board does not breach requirements relating to conflicts of interest by reason only of advising or representing a person involved in a dispute with a second person who is advised or represented by a second lawyer employed by the Board.

This Bill provides a process for the review of complaints about, and court applications in respect of, the use of property where an illegal activity is carried out that adversely affects the people in the community or neighbourhood where the property is located. The Bill also provides a process for requiring the removal of building fortifications that are a threat to public safety. Finally, consequential amendments are made to the Residential Tenancies Act.

This Bill replaces the Public Health Act and the Disease Registries Act. It provides a comprehensive frameowrk for the protection and promotion of public health in the Northwest Territories. Consequential amendments are made to the Education Act, the Medical Profession Act and the Mental Health Act. The Public Health Act and the Disease Registries Act are repealed.

This Bill amends the Legislative Assembly and Executive Council Act to provide that a transition allowance may be paid to a member who resigns his or her seat in the Legislative Assembly. The Bill also provides that no member may, by virtue of a break in service, receive a transition allowance that exceeds the annual indemnity.

This Bill amends the Student Financial Assistance Act to raise the maximum aggregate of the principal amounts of all student loans that may be made to one person.
