Steps of the 2008-2009 Review
| The Standing Committee on Government Operations plans the following steps for the review of the Official Languages Act. |
• Literature and document review
o Time line: Underway and on-going
• Survey, interview and focus group with Aboriginal languages frontline workers and professionals (community language coordinators and workers, teachers, interpreters and translators)
o Awasis Education Inc. was contracted by the Legislative Assembly to assist the Committee with this part of the review
o Time line: Completed by the end of the summer 2008
• Public Committee meetings
o Witnesses with designated roles under the Official Languages Act
o Stakeholder and expert witnesses
o Time line: fall/winter 2008/09
• Community visits and public hearings
o Selected communities representing the NWT regions and Official Languages
o Time line: fall of 2008
• Other input from the public
o Questionnaire
o Written submissions
o Time line: starting at the end of summer 2008 continuing over the fall |

The Standing Committee on Government Operations will analyze and evaluate the findings of these different review steps and report back to the Legislative Assembly:
• Interim report on the Official Languages Act review in the fall of 2008 summarizing the work underway and next steps
• Final report on the Official Languages Act review in the spring of 2009 including:
o Findings of all steps of the review
o Possible recommendations on how to improve the effectiveness, administration and implementation of the Official Languages Act |
