Capital Park - Area of Conservation

The Capital Area Park provides opportunities for further exploring and understanding the Northwest Territories, including:

  • politics and the NWT (the Legislative Assembly Building)
  • our many cultures (Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre)
  • our capital city (City Hall and the Northern Frontier Visitors Centre)
  • our natural environment (the Frame Lake walking trail and the Northern Frontier Visitors Centre)

In the Capital Area Park, the flags of each of the NWT's 33 communities are flown near the Ceremonial Circle. On the flag poles, each community name is first shown in the Aboriginal language of the area, then the official name. Yellowknife has been the capital of the NWT since 1967. The Dogrib name (Sombak'e) means place of money.

The ceremonial circle is a gathering place for the people of the Northwest Territories. The ceremonial firepit and the and the stages are for use by any groups wishing to celebrate their meaningful events.
