PUBLIC REVIEW

The Standing Committee on Government Operations, chaired by Kieron Testart, invites the public to attend a review of the Public Accounts of the Government of the Northwest Territories for the year ended March 31, 2016.

06 Public Hearing on Bills 15 & 17

The Standing Committee on Government Operations, chaired by Mr. Kieron Testart, is seeking public input on two bills that are before the standing committee.

Bill 15: An Act to Amend the Tobacco Tax Act
This Bill amends the Tobacco Tax Act to permit the introduction of a territorial stamp to assist in verifying that tax has been paid on tobacco sold in the NWT. It is further amended to require collection of the tax at the time tobacco is acquired by wholesale dealers for the purpose of resale.

Bill 17: An Act to Amend the Income Tax Act
This Bill amends the Income Tax Act by simplifying the delivery of additional support to low and modest income families; incorporating provisions of the Income Tax Act (Canada) in respect to the withholding of tax refunds; updating names of federal agencies; and clarifying the definition of Consumer Price Index.

06 Yellowknife: Public Hearing on Bill 18

The Standing Committee on Social Development, chaired by Mr. Shane Thompson, is reviewing two bills and will be travelling to northern communities to hold public hearings.

Bill 18: An Act to Amend the Health and Social Services Professions Act

This Bill amends the Health and Social Services Professions Act and imposes a requirement on registered members to comply with continuing competency recording requirements, and authorizes inspection of those records. It also authorizes the Minister to approve various items such as educational facilities, programs, and standards of practice.

20 Ledge Talks: Does NASA want to hear from us? YES!

The Legislative Library is please to present two dynamic NASA scientists in a public forum in the Great Hall of the Legislative Assembly building. 

Dr. Peter Griffith is the founding director of NASA’s Carbon Cycle and Ecosystems Office and is Chief Support Scientist for the Arctic Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE). He also directs the team that supports the Carbon Cycle & Ecosystems Focus Area at the headquarters for NASA’s Carbon Monitoring System (http://carbon.nasa.gov), and the North American Carbon Program (http://www.nacarbon.org), a component of the U.S. Global Change Research Program.

Dr. Charles “Chip” Miller is the Deputy Science Team Lead for the Arctic Boreal Vulnerability Experiment and the Principal Investigator (PI) for the Carbon in Arctic Reservoirs Vulnerability Experiment. He is the Deputy PI for the Orbiting Carbon Observatory and a member of the science teams for NASA’s Carbon Monitoring System and the Megacities Carbon Project.
