Legislative Assembly to Host Daughters of the Vote

(YELLOWKNIFE) December 5, 2016 – The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Honourable Jackson Lafferty, will host a Daughters of the Vote event at the Legislative Assembly in February 2017. Daughters of the Vote is an initiative of Equal Voice Canada; a national, multi-partisan organization dedicated to electing more women to all levels of politics.

Julie Green, MLA for Yellowknife Centre, attended a Daughters of the Vote event in Saskatchewan, which was held in conjunction with a meeting of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians – Canadian Region. Ms. Green will chair the event, and the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, Honourable Caroline Cochrane, will be invited as a keynote speaker. This event coincides with the 100 year anniversary of the beginning of women’s suffrage in Canada.

Quotes

“Increasing the number of women who run for elected office is a priority of the 18th Legislative Assembly and it is events like these that will promote involvement of young women in Territorial politics. I am honoured to host this event and I look forward to meeting these promising young women; leaders of our future generations.”
-    Honourable Jackson Lafferty, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly

“I was fortunate enough to attend the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Canadian Regions conference in Regina this year and was able to see Daughters of the Vote first hand. We need to take advantage of female interest in leadership roles throughout the NWT. There is not enough female representation in the Legislative Assembly and I would like to see that change.”
-    Julie Green, MLA Yellowknife Centre
