Ledge Talks: The Knowledge Series

(YELLOWKNIFE)  Thursday, October 16, 2014 – The Legislative Library will be hosting a Ledge Talk on Wednesday, October 22 at 7:30 pm in the Great Hall of the Legislative Assembly building. The focus of the talk will be Calm, Alert and Learning: a Practical Guide to Self-Regulation in Homes and Classrooms by Ms. Christine Robinson. Ms. Robinson has been working as an occupational therapist for over twenty years, specializing primarily in the areas of early intervention and school-based practice. She joined the MEHRIT Centre in 2007 working alongside Dr. Stuart Shanker.

In her presentation, Ms. Robinson will highlight the paradigm and strategies of Dr. Stuart Shanker's five-domain model of self-regulation, as described in his book, Calm, Alert and Learning. This interactive presentation will present the journey of an elementary school as they shift from a behavioural to a self-regulation approach to classroom management for students who are experiencing significant self-regulation difficulties. Exploring this case study together, Chris will look at the "how-to's" of applying Dr. Shanker's five-domain model to the real life of parenting and teaching.

There will be time for questions and discussion following the presentation. Media and the public are welcome.

Ledge Talks: The Knowledge Series is a forum for a wide variety of speakers to present current ideas, science, traditional knowledge, and issues relevant to the Northwest Territories and beyond.  Ledge Talks will also showcase research done by the many GNWT employees – often with collaborating partners – who are making substantial contributions to the world’s understanding of the North.
