(YELLOWKNIFE) - Michael Nadli Suspended as Member of the Legislative Assembly as a Result of Imprisonment for Assault.
Pursuant to section 6 of the Legislative Assembly and Executive Council Act, Mr. Michael Nadli is automatically disqualified to sit or act as a Member of the Legislative Assembly. This disqualification is a result of Mr. Nadli’s sentence earlier today to 45 days in jail for assault.
Although the seat is not formally declared vacant until the time for Mr. Nadli’s right of appeal has expired, or any appeal has been decided, vacancy will nonetheless occur on October 25, 2015 as a result of the dissolution of the 17th Legislative Assembly and the calling of a general election on October 26, 2015. A by-election is not necessary and the Legislative Assembly is not required to reconvene to address this matter.
Effective immediately, Mr. Nadli is no longer eligible to receive the indemnities and allowances of a Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories.
