Youth Parliament is an educational outreach program held every two years, hosted by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the NWT. This year's Youth Parliament will be held May 8-12, 2017 in Yellowknife.
Grades 9 and 10 students from the NWT have the opportunity to discuss and debate issues that they feel affect themselves and their peers.
Students come to the legislature and assume the role of a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) to prepare for and participate in a mock Session. Students in every constituency across the territory are encouraged to apply, but only one student is chosen from every riding.
Transportation to Yellowknife is provided, as well as accommodation and all meals. Students living in Yellowknife are invited to stay with the group at the hotel of choice.
Once in Yellowknife, students will get to tour the Legislative Assembly building and meet with their MLA. Throughout the week they will take part in many activities, including presentations from different people at the Legislative Assembly, from the Clerk to the Commissioner.
In preparation for the Mock session, students will take on the role of their MLAs and decide on the issues they want to debate, and prepare a Member’s or Minister’s statement. The Mock session will be held in the Chamber and will be broadcast live on the Legislative Assembly TV channel!
There will also be opportunities for the students to take part in some fun extra-curricular activities such as soccer, volleyball, bowling, movies, and shopping! All activities will be supervised by employees of the Legislative Assembly.
Students may have the opportunity to be interviewed by different media outlets about their experience during Youth Parliament.
There is no cost to participants of Youth Parliament, but some students like to bring spending money in case they want to do some shopping. Also, students are not compensated for attending Youth Parliament; it is meant to be an educational experience.
Youth Parliament is held every two years and will be advertised at all schools in the Northwest Territories well before the application deadline.
