Glen Abernethy was re-elected to the 18th Legislative Assembly as the Member representing the electoral district of Great Slave. He also served as the Member for Great Slave during the 16th and 17th Legislative Assemblies
During the 17th Assembly, Mr. Abernethy was a member of the Executive Council and held the following positions:
- Minister of Human Resources (2011 - 2013)
- Minister of Justice (2011 - 2013)
- Minister Responsible for the Public Utilities Board (2011 - 2013)
- Minister of Public Work & Services (2012 - 2013)
- Minister of Health & Social Services (2013 - 2015)
- Minister Responsible for Seniors (2013 - 2015)
- Minister Responsible for Persons with Disabilities (2013 - 2015)
In addition, he was the Chair of the Ministerial Social Envelope Committee, which was tasked with developing an NWT Anti-Poverty Strategy.
Prior to being elected in an official capacity, Mr. Abernethy worked in human resources for the GNWT, where he was responsible for the recruitment and retention of health professionals including nurses, doctors, and social workers employed in the NWT.
Mr. Abernethy is a life-long NWT resident who was born in Frobisher Bay, now known as Iqaluit, Nunavut. Mr. Abernethy and his wife Carolyn Smith live in Yellowknife within the riding of Great Slave.
Outside of politics, Mr. Abernethy enjoys playing bass guitar in his 10-piece soul band The Committed, sailing and spending time with family at their Prelude Lake cabin.
