01 Territorial Election

The next Territorial General Election will be Tuesday, October 1, 2019.

The Northwest Territories follows a system of fixed date elections, whereby the Legislative Assembly is scheduled to be dissolved every four years so that a general election may be held.

01 Election Night Results in the Great Hall
 
The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly is inviting the public to the Great Hall of the Legislative Assembly building on the evening of Tuesday, October 1, 2019, to follow results of the 2019 Territorial General Election as they become available. There will be TVs displaying the results from CBC and the Elections NWT website.
Results for the 2019 Territorial General Election will be available starting after the Polls close at 8:00 pm. The building will be open to the public until 10:00 pm and refreshments will be provided.

This event is open to the public and the media is welcome to attend.

11 MLA Swearing-in Ceremony

19th Legislative Assembly – Swearing-in ceremony for MLAs

 

(Yellowknife) October 10, 2019 – The swearing-in ceremony for Members of the 19th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly will take place on Friday, October 11th, 2019 at 10:30 am in the Chamber of the Legislative Assembly. 

 

Before assuming office, each member of the Legislative Assembly must take and subscribe before the Commissioner of the Northwest Territories the Oath of Office set out in the Legislative Assembly and Executive Council Act (LAEC), the Oath of Allegiance set out in the Fifth Schedule to the Constitution Act, 1867, and the Oath of Loyalty to the People of the Northwest Territories, also set out in the LAEC Act.

 

Media and the public are welcome to observe the proceedings from the public gallery.

The proceedings will also be broadcast live on the Assembly’s television network and webcast via the Legislative Assembly’s Facebook, YouTube and Twitter pages, as well as the Assembly’s website: www.assembly.gov.nt.ca.

18 Territorial Leadership Committee Process Begins
On Friday, October 18th, 2019 at 9:00 am Members will gather in the Chamber to commence the Territorial Leadership Committee process. Members who are interested in running for the position of Premier of the 19th Legislative Assembly will have the opportunity to announce their intentions and deliver a speech of up to 20 minutes in support of their candidacy. All Members will have the opportunity to ask two questions of each nominated candidate once the speeches have ended. The Territorial Leadership Committee proceedings will then recess until Thursday, October 24th, 2019 at 9:00 am.
 
The public and the media are invited to view the proceedings of the Territorial Leadership Committee from the public gallery. The proceedings will also be broadcast live on the Assembly’s television network and webcast via the Legislative Assembly’s Facebook, YouTube and Twitter pages, as well as the Assembly’s website: www.assembly.gov.nt.ca.
 
The Speaker, Premier, and Executive Council will be appointed by means of a formal motion in the House on Friday, October 25th, and will be sworn-in by the Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, the Honourable Margaret Thom, on that same date.
