Legislative Assembly Flags Lowered to Commemorate Vimy Ridge Day

(YELLOWKNIFE) April 7, 2017 – From sunrise to sunset on Sunday, April 9, 2017, the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories will join federal, provincial, and municipal institutions in lowering the flags outside of the legislature to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

In 2003, the Government of Canada declared April 9 to be “Vimy Ridge Day”. This day was created to honour and remember soldiers who fought and gave their lives during the First World War Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917.

“Soldiers gave their lives during the First World War so that Canadians could have a brighter future. Thanks to these brave people, we have a beautiful country that we can all be proud of. I am honoured for the Legislative Assembly of the NWT to take part in this historical observance,” said Honourable Speaker, Jackson Lafferty.
