Legislative Assembly Announces Scholarship Fund

(YELLOWKNIFE)  Friday, March 14, 2014 – The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories, Honourable Jackie Jacobson, and the Yellowknife Community Foundation are pleased to announce the establishment of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly Scholarship.

The scholarship, which will be awarded annually, is intended to assist individuals pursuing post-secondary studies in political science or a related field.

Factors taken into consideration when reviewing applications will include academic achievement, community involvement, extracurricular activities, and a written statement. Funding for the scholarship came from a surplus remaining after the Legislative Assembly Building Society completed payment on the building mortgage.

“This scholarship is designed to support and encourage our students to pursue their academic interest in government and politics, particularly as it pertains to the Northwest Territories. I am pleased to announce this scholarship and the opportunities it will provide for future generations,” said Speaker Jacobson. “I also want to thank the Board of the Legislative Assembly Building Society whose careful stewardship of funds made this scholarship possible.”

“We are pleased to welcome the Legislative Assembly’s Scholarship into our group of funds, now numbering over 25, to support northerners in furthering their education. Our call for scholarship applications is now open, and we look forward to receiving many qualified applications,” said Charles Dent, President of the Yellowknife Community Foundation.
The Yellowknife Community Foundation is the leading philanthropic organization in Yellowknife. A registered charity, the Foundation was formed in 1993 to provide residents (and former residents) with a means of supporting projects in our community for the enduring future. The Foundation is not singularly dedicated to any specific area of support. It embodies a simple concept – that people working together can make a difference. Donations to the Foundation are eligible deductions for income tax purposes. The money, invested over time, will grow and will continue to have an impact long after the original gift is made.
The deadline for applications is May 15th each year. For details on the application process, please visit http://www.yellowknifecommunityfoundation.ca/html/_funds/24_legislative_....
