(YELLOWKNIFE) Tuesday, May 29, 2018 – The Standing Committees on Government Operations and Social Development today presented the report on Bill 6 titled “Report on the Review of Bill 6: Cannabis Legalization and Regulation Implementation Act”.
Standing Committee members travelled throughout the territory, visiting 16 communities in 9 days, requesting feedback from community members on the proposed bill. During their travels, committee members also visited six schools across the territory where they spoke to grade 12 students.
The Report includes a section titled ‘What we Heard’ and includes feedback from the public regarding, but not limited to, the following: Economic Growth and Job Creation, Public Education, Youth, and other issues regarding Community Control and Advisory Committees.
“We had amazing feedback from northerners on this omnibus bill. Each and every meeting that we conducted had great turnout, which just shows how much the public is interested in this new law and the effects that it will have on them. There were some serious concerns that were brought forward and I am pleased that we were able to add these concerns to our report.” – Kieron Testart, Chair of the Standing Committee on Government Operations
“This is such an important proposed bill that will directly affect northerners; committee understood the importance of taking this bill on the road. We wanted to ensure that northerners were able to share their thoughts with us, both positive and negative. I was very impressed with the numbers that we saw in the communities and am happy that were are able to share your concerns with the government.” – Shane Thompson, Chair of the Standing Committee on Social Development
