Standing Committee on Economic Development and Environment Chair Responds to News Article

(YELLOWKNIFE) Thursday, October 18, 2018 – The Chair of the Standing Committee on Economic Development and Environment (SCEDE), Mr. Cory Vanthuyne, would like to respond to an October 17 online article written by Northern News Services Ltd. The article states that Mr. Vanthuyne “slammed responses to concerns about a new Mineral Resources Act” in a leaked confidential letter written on behalf of SCEDE to the government.

“The article attributes direct quotes to me from a letter to the government regarding the proposed Act. What the article fails to acknowledge is that this letter was sent by me on behalf of the Standing Committee on Economic Development and Environment, which I chair. The opinions expressed in that letter were those of the committee as a whole and not necessarily reflective of my own personal views. This article also fails to disclose that this letter was sent to the government as part of a confidential exchange of information that normally occurs between cabinet and regular members prior to the formal drafting and introduction of a bill in the House. I am honoured to chair this important committee and accept that this responsibility comes with the duty to speak on its behalf. It is regrettable that the reporter did not contact me directly for comment prior to publishing this story,” says Mr. Vanthuyne.

Confidential exchanges of information are a critical feature of Consensus Government that allow standing committees an opportunity to provide feedback to the government during the early drafting stages of the bill. In the absence of this opportunity, non-cabinet Members would have no opportunity to have input on draft legislation prior to formal introduction in the Legislative Assembly at First Reading.
