NWT Languages Commissioner


The Legislative Assembly is seeking a qualified individual to serve as the Northwest Territories Languages Commissioner for a term of four years. The Official Languages Act of the Northwest Territories recognizes eleven Official Languages and gives all residents certain rights and privileges with respect to using and accessing public services in those languages. The role of the Languages Commissioner is to receive and investigate complaints made under the Act and make recommendations to government agencies. The Commissioner may also initiate complaints on their own initiative.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the Official Languages Act, which can be found at www.justice.gov.nt.ca/en/legislation.

They must have experience in the conduct of investigations and the management of complaint files. Proven communication skills are a must. The ability to speak more than one of the NWT’s official languages is not a requirement for the position but would be considered a strong asset.
